The Sacramento Kings look to halt a season-worst six-game losing streak when they host the short-handed
    Dallas Mavericks on Monday night.

The first five losses of the skid were under Mike Brown, who was fired on Friday in an unconventional manner.
Assistant Doug Christie was named interim coach and oversaw a 132-122
road loss against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday.

Sacramento had high hopes entering the season but sits six games below .500 with the campaign about 40 percent complete.

The killer setback for Brown came Thursday against the visiting Detroit Pistons.
The Kings led by 10 with less than three minutes to go
but eventually lost 114-113. Detroit's Jaden Ivey converted a game-winning
four-point play stemming from a foul on De'Aaron Fox
with three seconds left in the game.

Brown sharply criticized Fox following the game. Brown then conducted practice and handled media responsibilities on Friday.

A short time later, he was fired before the team
boarded its flight to Los Angeles.

Now the club is trying to regroup, with star Domantas
Sabonis saying it is time for a turnaround.

"We obviously know we haven't been performing at our best,"
Sabonis said. "And we have to do a better job. Me, as one of the leaders of the team, I got to make sure that that happens. We got to win all the games that we can."

Sabonis had 14 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in the loss to the Lakers.
Fox recorded 29 points, 12 assists and four steals.
DeMar DeRozan added 25 points and Malik Monk scored 20.

With the Kings mired in 12th place in the Western Conference, Fox is feeling a sense
    of urgency.

"Obviously, the conference continues to get better," Fox said.
"But us, you know, we kind of got a little stagnant, and that is what it is. We have to find a way to get better."

Dallas will be playing its third game since losing star Luka
Doncic to a strained left calf on Christmas Day.

The Mavericks are 7-3 without Doncic this season, a
mark that includes a 126-122 loss to the host Portland Trail Blazers
    on Saturday.

Dallas never led in the contest, and four Portland players reached the
20-point mark. The Trail Blazers led by as many as 21 points in the
    third quarter.

Kyrie Irving carried the Mavericks with a season-best
46 points, including 20 in the final quarter.

"Kai, our leader, he got us back in that game," Dallas coach Jason Kidd said.
"It's just unfortunate we couldn't make the right plays on both ends when we got it down.

"That's just who he is. Kai's a leader and wants
to help the team win. Being able to score 46 wasn't easy."

The loss was just the fifth in the past 20 games for the Mavericks.

But it felt painful to Irving, who wasn't pleased about the club digging such a huge hole against one of the worst teams in the Western Conference.

"We definitely could have done a better job keeping the game
a lot closer," Irving said. "Getting down like that,
I don't want to say it's characteristic for us, but we're used to it to
a certain degree to get out of holes like that and give
ourselves a chance. Most teams would give up, especially on a back-to-back.

But our identity is we don't want to give up."

Dallas will be without Naji Marshall, who will miss his second contest as part of a four-game suspension for his part in an altercation with Jusuf Nurkic of the Phoenix Suns on Friday. P.J. Washington, suspended one game for his role in the scuffle, will return on Monday.

Mavericks big man Dereck Lively II (hip) is listed as questionable. He has missed the past two games.

It's the invention that changed the way the world watched
    home recordings and Hollywood films.

But in just four weeks' time, the last ever company to manufacture videocassette
recorders will shut down production as the Netflix
    generation takes over.

The closure in August comes as services like Netflix and YouTube continue to
revolutionise the way we watch films and TV.

    THE DECLINE OF THE VCR

The VCR's first death knell sounded when DVD players were introduced around the world in 1997.

But DVDs didn't become more popular than video cassettes until
    2003.

Since then, the internet has dramatically changed how we watch our favourite TV shows, with services like BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime streaming content directly to our devices.

The streaming and download market is now even bigger than the DVD
market, according to PwC. And by 2017, the streaming market is
set to be worth $12 billion.

Japan's Funai Electric, which has been making VCRs since 1983, used to sell 15 million VCRs
    a year in its heyday.

But last year the company sold just 750,000 as the video cassette market continues to
    shrink.

According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Funai Electric
will shut down its VCR operations by the end of August.

Alongside a shrinking demand from consumers, Funai said it is also
having difficulty getting the correct parts to manufacture
VCRs with, as the technology is so dated.

Rival Panasonic stopped making VCRs in 2012, but Funai was still making the tape machines for Sanyo in China, which then sold them on to customers in the United States and other markets.

There is a still a thriving second-hand market for VCRs, with many
families looking to convert cherished memories recorded on tape into digital

And VCRs are just one of many technologies from the past that have taken decades to die out.

Godrej and Boyce - the last company left in the
world that was still manufacturing typewriters
    - halted its production in Mumbai, India in 2011 with just a few hundred machines left in stock.

Video cassette predecessor Betamax was still
going strong until 2002 when Sony stopped production of new recorders.

But new formats of the video technology called SuperBetamax are still being used by small groups of people.

    GOOGLE REVEALS 'VHS MODE'

In 2013 Google unveiled a 'VHS' feature for
YouTube in honour of the video tape that sparked the home entertainment revolution.

In celebration of the VHS launching 57 years ago, Google let selected videos use a 'VHS simulator'.

It added the white flicks, wonky video and errors that plagued VHS recordings.

'Not too long ago, the video tape was the media of choice for living rooms around
the world,' the firm said in a statement.

'In celebration of the 57th birthday of the first commercial video cassette
recorder, check out a fun VHS mode for the YouTube player to relive the magic feel
    of vintage video tapes.

'On select videos, you'll find a VHS button in the bottom right of
the player - just click to turn back the clock and enjoy the static
and fuzzy motion of the VHS era.'

With its panoramic window with resort and mountain views, mezzanine double bed and standalone
bathtub, there is something almost cinematic about our quarters in the
five-star Scandi-chic Altapura hotel in Val Thorens.

Certainly, there is enough acreage in the living room area for
    a film crew (see video).

So it is a big tick for the bedroom.

And big ticks for just about everything else at the hotel.

The property occupies a prime slice of ski-in, ski-out real estate at
the 2,300m- (7,545ft) high resort - Europe's loftiest and declared the world's best ski resort nine times,
including for 2024/2025 - and is something of a mini
wonderland, a feeling helped by the actual tree trunks soaring from the ground
to the ceiling by the ground-floor lifts.

Then there's the beautiful lounge, liberally festooned with comfy
70s-style chairs and sofas - and punctuated by an enticing circular bar -
for post-piste limb restoration and the exchange of mountain-themed tales
    of derring-do.

The spa is also magnetic, drawing in guests with its
stunning inside-outside pool and ice-filled igloo room.

For my daughter, this part of the hotel is possibly the property
highlight, even trumping the kids club.

Pictured above is the hotel's inside-outside pool,
which is part of a 'magnetic' spa complex

The outside section of the hotel's pool, which is great fun for young and old alike

The dining options, meanwhile, are stellar.

There's swish Italian Casa Alta and a brilliant Alpine-themed eaterie,
La Laiterie - the hotel's nerve centre for raclettes and fondues.

The cheese here is top-tier, cockle-warming stuff.
And the wine is plaudit-worthy, too.

Breakfast is served in a more casual space, with windows galore offering sterling mountain views.

Altapura puts on a good spread for the first meal of the day, though the eggs for 'eggs and soldiers' (l'oeuf à
la coque ) are an abject failure - distinctly undercooked.
(The chef forgets the four-minute 20-second rule for the perfect runny yolk.) And trying to secure a pot
of coffee involves a game of Pac-Man with the staff,
wandering between the tables until you bump into one of
them to put in an order.
