A fire hit the Abu Sifin church located in the densely
populated Imbaba neighbourhood west of the Nile River

Funerals were held in two Cairo churches Sunday evening for 41 victims of a fire that ripped through a Coptic Christian church
during mass, forcing worshippers to jump out of windows.

The blaze, blamed on an electrical fault, hit the Abu
Sifin church in densely populated Imbaba, a working class district west
of the Nile River, part of Giza governorate in greater Cairo.

Hundreds gathered to pay their respects in and around the
two Giza churches where clergymen prayed for the victims, according to AFP correspondents.

Pallbearers pushed through crowds of weeping mourners who reached for the coffins,
including that of a priest at the church, Father Abdel-Messih Bekhit.

The Egyptian Coptic Church and the health ministry reported 41 dead and
14 injured in the blaze before emergency services brought it
    under control.

Witnesses to the fire Sunday morning described people rushing into the multi-storey house of worship to
save those trapped, but the rescuers were soon overwhelmed by heat and deadly smoke.

Copts are the largest Christian community in the Middle East, making up at least 10 million of Egypt's 103 million Muslim-majority population.

    - Power surge -

A Coptic priest outside Abu Sifin church -- a witness said some people threw themselves out windows to escape the blaze, and
    one landed on a car

"Everyone was carrying kids out of the building," said Ahmed
Reda Baioumy, who lives next to the church. "But the fire was getting bigger and you could only go in once or you would asphyxiate."

Another witness, Sayed Tawfik, told AFP that "some threw themselves out of windows to escape the fire".

He pointed to a car bearing dents "left by a person who is now lying in the hospital with a broken arm and back".

A resident of the area, Mina Masry, said emergency services were slow in responding.

Ambulances took "over an hour to arrive" and fire trucks "nearly an hour, though their station is five minutes away".

"If the ambulances had come on time, they could have rescued people," Masry
    added.

Witnesses described how people rushed into the burning house of worship to rescue those trapped but were soon overwhelmed by the heat and the deadly smoke

A statement from the public prosecutor's office indicated that asphyxiation caused the deaths, as there were "no visible injuries".

The interior ministry said "forensic evidence revealed that the blaze broke out in an air-conditioning unit on the second floor of the church building"
    which also houses social services.

Father Farid Fahmy, of another nearby church, told AFP a short circuit caused the fire.

"The power was out and they were using a generator," he said.
"When the power came back, it caused an overload."

In the morning, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on his Facebook page that
he had "mobilised all state services" in response.
He later said he had "presented his condolences by phone" to
Pope Tawadros II, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

He also directed the Armed Forces Engineering Authority to "take over the reconstruction and renovation" of the church, the presidency said in a statement.

    - Religious minority -

Christian communities often complain that reconstruction of churches after devastating fires is marked by long delays and bureaucratic hurdles.

Giza's governor ordered "urgent aid of 50,000 pounds (around $2,600) for the families of the deceased and 10,000 pounds for the injured".

Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli (C) visits the charred remains of Abu Sifin Coptic church after the deadly
    fire

The grand imam of Al-Azhar, Egypt's foremost Muslim institution, expressed his condolences for "the tragic accident" and affirmed "the readiness of Al-Azhar hospitals to receive the injured".

A statement from the office of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres offered his "deepest condolences" to the families of the
    victims.

Accidental fires are not uncommon in the sprawling megalopolis of Cairo, where millions live in informal settlements.

Baioumy, the neighbour, told AFP that firefighters were hampered by the church's location "on a very narrow street".

Egypt, with its often dilapidated and poorly maintained infrastructure, has suffered
several deadly fires in recent years.

The Coptic minority has endured attacks and complained of discrimination in the north African country, the Arab world's most populous.

Copts have been targeted in deadly attacks by Islamist militants,
particularly after Sisi overthrew former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, with churches, schools and homes burnt down.

Copts also complain they have been left out of key state positions and they have deplored restrictive legislation for the construction and renovation of churches.

Sisi, the first Egyptian president to attend the Coptic Christmas mass every year, in February appointed
the first ever Coptic judge to head the Supreme Constitutional Court, the country's highest.

It was a race against time for demolition crews bringing down beach-side properties ravaged by
Sydney's monster storm a fortnight ago ahead of another expected weekend of wild weather.

Heavy machinery moved in on Friday to pull down some of the
battered homes at Collaroy on the northern beaches.

Some residents could be seen scrambling to remove the wreckage
as the skies began to darken with forecasts that Sydney, along with other parts
of New South Wales and Queensland, are set to bear the
    brunt of the system.

The beach-side properties ravaged by Sydney's monster storm a fortnight ago are
being demolished ahead of another weekend of wild weather

Heavy machinery moved into Collaroy on Friday to
pull down some of the battered homes at Collaroy on the northern beaches ahead of a new low moving in at the weekend

Another low is set to bring a burst of strong winds and heavy rain to
the east coast that was pummelled by wild weather just over a week ago.

Residents in Collaroy looked on as several of the ten multi-million dollar homes savaged by powerful
waves and gale force winds in the storm were knocked down.

Others were boarded up in the prospect of another lashing and had extra
sandbags put in place to try and keep the tide back.

Work continued through Friday at the damaged homes at Collaroy beach with fears another savage storm is set to hit over
    the weekend

The Beach Club was boarded up and had timber framing put in place ahead of
    paintwork on Friday

Debris still litters the sand around badly damaged homes at Collaroy battered by a superstorm a fortnight ago

Meteorologist Tom Saunders from Sky News confirmed there will be widespread rain over the
    weekend.

'We are still expecting widespread falls of 50 to 100mm on the western side
of the ranges through central/southern QLD and NSW,
which will trigger minor flooding, particularly around central QLD,' he stated on his
    weather blog.

'Warragamba (Dam) storage is currently 98 per cent full and with 50mm likely from
this event from Saturday to Monday the dam should spill which may cause flooding along the Nepean River.'

He also warned that 'another monster low
is likely late next week over south-east Australia'.

Sydney is forecast to cop up to 70mm of rain from Saturday to Monday, according to Weatherzone.

While Brisbane and Canberra will get most of
its downpour on Sunday with up to 40mm of rain.

But Melbourne will remain almost untouched as less than a millimetres of
rain is predicted for Saturday and Sunday.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said the
system did not look as bad as the one that took out chunks of Sydney's coastline on the northern beaches, with the king
tides swallowing waterfront mansions along Collaroy.

It was the worst storm Sydney had seen in 40 years.

But Mr Dutschke did warn there was a chance some areas may be hit
    harder this time around.

'There is one thing to emphasise on the negative side is that there is a significant flood risk
given how much rain has already fallen a bit over the week
    ago,' Mr Dutschke said.

'Lots of dams are near capacity, some are at a good chance to spill over.'

Mr Dutschke added it was not unusual for two low systems to hit
in the period of late autumn and early winter, saying it was 'prime time'

'In the last two years there were some periods we were getting
it more frequently than that,' he said.

While Collaroy was one of the hardest hit areas (above),  Melbourne will again remain almost untouched as less than a millimetres of rain is predicted
    for Saturday and Sunday

Melbourne will be relatively unaffected by the wild weather like last time,
but 'more significant weather' will be felt east of
the city in Gippsland and East Gippsland areas.

But there was a silver lining to the rainfall,
    Mr Dutschke said.

'On the positive side, there is some inland parts of western Queensland and NSW that will get worthwhile and welcome rain out of this and it won't get
    too windy,' he said.

The recent superstorm not only brought destruction to NSW but it also
brought major flooding to large areas of Tasmania, with Premier Will Hodgman declaring it to be the worst flood event in 40 years.
